Copycat Red Lobster Tartar Sauce

It was fish-and-chips week here. I’m a big fan of fish-and-chips, and I find myself ordering it regularly when we eat out. Usually I just like mine hit with a few good shakes of malt vinegar and maybe a squeeze or two of lemon. This time I decided to make a copycat Red Lobster tartar sauce. And all I can say is… Wow! Now this is a great tartar sauce. I thought my beer-battered fish would be the winner-winner, but the tartar sauce really came through!

Copycat Red Lobster Tartar Sauce

The perfect thickness for dipping fish or spreading onto a fish sandwich and packed with flavor, this copycat Red Lobster tartar sauce is really fantastic. I find myself looking forward to my next fish-and-chips lunch more and more now. Will it replace malt vinegar as my favorite? Yeah, it might actually. It’s just that good.

I have to admit that my usual order at Red Lobster is the shrimp. I’m a shrimp-aholic. I love fried shrimp. Walt’s fried shrimp is probably my favorite. And even though cocktail sauce is my go-to dipping sauce, I’ve found that I like dipping my shrimp in tartar sauce more and more!

I recently discovered Blue Plate mayonnaise, which I think is the best around. If you can’t find it locally you can pick it up online for a fair price.

Also try my copycat of Red Lobster’s Cheddar Bay biscuits. Love tartar sauce as much as I do? Try my spicy Old Bay version too!

Spicy Old Bay Tartar Sauce

When I first saw this recipe for a spicy Old Bay tartar sauce it took me all of about 2 seconds to figure out exactly what I was going to use it on. A fried shrimp po boy. The sauce is perfect on a po boy. It has a mild Dijon flavor. It has a good bit of kick. And it tastes of Old Bay. If that doesn’t scream shrimp po boy I don’t know what does.

Spicy Old Bay Tartar Sauce

This recipe for Old Bay tartar sauce was inspired by a recipe from Steven Raichlen’s massive book, BBQ USA. it is packed with over 400 dishes, almost all with a spicy side to them. BBQ USA sits on my bookshelf along Raichlen’s other great cookbooks.

I recently discovered Blue Plate mayonnaise, which I think is the best around. If you can’t find it locally you can pick it up online for a fair price.

Also try my chipotle tartar sauce.

Notes

If I’m using this sauce as a tartar sauce I drain the capers. But I do not drain them if I’m using this as a dip for fried shrimp.

Chipotle Tartar Sauce

I’m a big fan of po boy sandwiches. Sometimes fancy, sometimes not so fancy. Last weekend I made two ‘cheater’ fried clam and fried shrimp po boys. I call them ‘cheater’ because I used frozen already-fried seafood. But just because I’m cheating doesn’t mean I’m not going to step up my game a bit by adding a fantastic chipotle tartar sauce. A bit spicy and a bit tangy, this is the perfect tartar sauce to kick up any seafood.

Chipotle Tartar Sauce

You want to use a mayonnaise that isn’t too thin or your chipotle tartar sauce will, of course, be thin. Not that that’s a bad thing, but most people like a nice, thick tartar sauce. You could call it a remoulade or comeback sauce if yours turns out a bit on the thin side!

I recently discovered Blue Plate mayonnaise, which I think is the best around. If you can’t find it locally you can pick it up online for a fair price.
