Sauce Boat, Ashtray and Sweets Comport

Here are some miscellaneous items (Sauce Boat, Ashtray and Sweets Comport) I put together by The Homer Laughlin China Company.  On the left is a Fiesta sauce boat in green.  I really love the streamlined look.  The sauce boat was produced from 1937 until early in 1969.

The middle item is a Harlequin regular ashtray in yellow.  It’s in perfect shape and I was happy to find it.  Usually when I see a Harlequin ashtray, they have chips and have been used.  I don’t think mine was ever used.  Production began in 1938 and was discontinued in 1945.

The last item on the right is a sweets comport in green.  People sometimes refer to this as a “compote,” but Homer Laughlin used the word “comport” on its price lists.  It was made from late 1935 until late 1946.

Here are a few pieces from my Harlequin collection.  Harlequin was made by the Homer Laughlin China Company.   Left to right are a 22-ounce jug, an 11″ platter and a teapot with lid.  The 22-ounce jug was used for milk or cream on the breakfast table and was produced from 1938 to 1959. The teapot was produced the same years.  The oval platter was produced from 1936 to 1959.  The Harlequin line was sold in Woolworth stores starting in 1936 and it was their best selling dish line of all time and sold for 28 years!

Homer Laughlin Harlequin and Fiesta

Here are some of my Harlequin pieces along with a Fiesta utility tray.  At the top is a Harlequin novelty creamer in turquoise.  The novelty creamer was produced by the Homer Laughlin China Company from 1938 through 1959.

The Fiesta utility tray in red was produced from 1936 through 1946.  The utility tray was used as a base for a sugar and creamer and for serving celery or carrot sticks, relishes and condiments.

My basketweave nut dishes are in maroon, red and turquoise.  Some believe that this was intended as an individual ashtray, but was marketed as a nut dish.  The shape was copied from a Japanese Marutomo ware dish.  Production began in 1938 and ended in 1943.

The individual or toy creamer is one of my favorite Harlequin pieces.  Even though the individual creamer was dipped in Harlequin glazes, it is not believed to be part of the Harlequin line.  Production began in 1939 and ended in 1942. Mine are in red and turquoise.
