It seems that there is a sub shop on every corner no matter where you go. When we do grab a sub, it’s Jersey Mike’s. We love the bread, the ratio of ingredients, oil and vinegar, and seasonings. We don’t eat out often, so when we get a craving for a sub we make a Jersey Mike’s sub copycat recipe at home.

The Keys To Discuss

The keys to making a good Jersey Mike’s sub copycat recipe are the right oil ratio (3 parts canola oil and 1 part olive oil) and the red wine vinegar (5% diluted). After that, you can do whatever you want, pretty much. We like ours “Mike’s Way”, with tomato, lettuce, onion, and of course oregano and salt. It’s a combination that always works for us.

Thinner Is Better

In my opinion, you gotta go thin on the meats when you make a sub. Or sandwich. Either one. I’d rather add more meats than have a single layer of really thick ham. Or roast beef. Or whatever. For me it’s more of a textural thing. I’m having a deli meat sandwich, after all, and not a deep-fried pork tenderloin sandwich or Nashville hot chicken sandwich.

A chef friend of mine taught me a trick that I like to use when adding my meats. He rolled his meat up a bit, almost like a cigar but loosely. When added to the bread the meat looked bigger. Taller. Like you were getting more for your money. It’s a great hack that I follow to this day!

Ingredients

For the sandwich

  • 2 loaves French bread sliced horizontally
  • ½ head iceberg lettuce shredded
  • 1 pound deli sandwich meat sliced thin
  • 2 large tomatoes sliced
  • 1 large sweet onion sliced
  • 2 teaspoons dried oregano more or less, to taste, crushed
  • 2 teaspoons kosher salt more or less, to taste
  • red wine vinegar diluted to 5%, see note
  • 3 tablespoons canola oil
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil

Instructions

  • Assemble the sandwich by dividing the meat between the bread halves.
  • Add the tomato and onion slices. Top with a few good handfuls of the lettuce.
  • Sprinkle the sandwiches with the red wine vinegar. Don't be shy with it.
  • Combine the canola and olive oils and sprinkle over the sandwiches. More is better, in my opinion.
  • Finally, sprinkle tops with the oregano and salt. Add the top halves of the bread, slice in half in the middle. Serve.

Notes

Note: The red wine vinegar you use should be diluted to 5%. I checked a few of the bottles available at our local grocery store and all were 5%, so I did not need to dilute the vinegar any further.

        1. Hi. Sorry it wasn’t clear. Most store-bought red wine vinegars are 5%. The label should indicate that. Chances are you won’t have to dilute it further with water. Without knowing what percent vinegar you have, it’s hard to say any exact amounts but I’d say if it’s more than 5% just add a splash of water. I’d call it totally optionally, though.

  1. Wow… This recipe was amazing…! So juicy and tasty- I was even able to transfer it from your website to my phone using the MyCookbook web tool. Jersey Mikes is one of my favorite places to go. I go several times a month and buy the turkey or tuna sub. Once a month I treat myself to a philly cheese steak from there. Your recipe is just like Jersey Mike’s-if not much better. Doing it this way will save me a lot of money too. I still will go once a month for my philly cheese steak, but I think I will make the turkey sub at home 🙂 I always advise Jersey Mikes to put extra oregano and vinegar on my sub. Very nice to be able to put as much as I want on it at home.

May I suggest a recipe for Firehouse Subs (turkey)-fully involved? That sandwich may be hard to do-just a though. Thanks so much. I can’t wait to try your other subs.

  2. Also, I added provolone cheese and used Publix hoagie bread as they did not have french bread at the time. The hoagie bread was very soft and tasty, so that is a good choice also.

  3. Need to have grinded black pepper, good amount of it. I use red union, but sweet white union is good too. J Mike soaks the sandwiches they sell with red wine vinegar. I do mine the same, even more usually.
