Spiral Hot Dogs with Queso Sauce

Anything on a stick is fun to eat. Especially if there are BBQ sauce and cheese involved. These spiral hot dogs are served with a queso dipping sauce that has the added bonus of being a fantastic dip for tortilla chips.

Spiral Hot Dogs with Queso Sauce

Adding Worcestershire sauce to BBQ sauce really adds a great flavor to these spiral hot dogs with queso sauce. People are expecting straight-up, normal BBQ sauce. Instead they get a nice surprise when they take that first bite. Try it at least once without the cheese. Then take that tasty dog and dunk it (deep) into that queso sauce and you’ve got a dog to remember. The spirals will help keep both the BBQ sauce and cheese sauce on the dogs. Not on the plate. That doesn’t do you any good. You want them in every bite!

Ingredients

For the dogs

For the queso sauce

  • ¼ pound Velveeta cut into 1/2-inch cubes
  • ¼ cup milk
  • ½ cup tomatoes chopped and seeded. Or substitute 1/2 cup canned petite diced tomatoes, drained
  • 1 tablespoon reserved barbecue and Worcestershire mix from above
  • Hot sauce to taste (optional)

Instructions

For the dogs

  • Combine the barbecue sauce and Worcestershire sauce. Reserve 1 tablespoon of the mixture for the queso sauce.
  • Place a hot dog on a flat surface.
  • Hold a knife at a 45 degree angle to the dog, and insert into the dog 1/8″. Rotate the dog slowly, making an incision as you go.
  • Repeat with remaining dogs.
  • Carefully thread dogs onto the skewers.
  • Place hot dogs over a hot grill. Cook for a few minutes then rotate.
  • Once the dogs are nearly done, with a nice char, brush with the barbecue sauce mix and grill a little longer.
  • Serve dogs with the queso sauce, for dipping.

For the queso sauce

  • Place Velveeta and milk into a small sauce pan over medium heat.
  • Stir often until the cheese has melted.
  • Reduce the heat and stir in the tomatoes, reserved barbecue and Worcestershire mix, and hot sauce, if desired.
  • Keep warm until ready to use.

Notes

Double the queso dip and have plenty left for dipping tortilla chips.

Buffalo Hot Dogs

Wow, I was blown away by these Buffalo hot dogs. They’re crazy easy to make, but they have a little wing-like kick (thanks to plenty of Frank’s RedHot sauce) and the blue cheese absolutely go great with hot grilled all-beef hot dogs. Wing sauce on a hot dog is a great thing. Skip the ketchup.

Buffalo Hot Dogs

Look Different. Taste Fantastic.

The celery and carrot topping added a nice crunch to these dogs. I have to admit, when I order or make chicken wings, I tend to skip the veggies. But, these dogs need them.

If you want to keep the Buffalo wing theme going, just serve these dogs with some Buffalo slaw! Buffalo hot dogs prove that more ‘Buffalo’ is a good thing!

Pickle Hot Dogs

Nothing beats a hot dog straight off the grill, mounded high with fresh toppings. These simple pickle dogs have a great contrast between the beef hot dog and the crunch and bite of fresh cucumber, dill pickle, and relish. Sure, you’ve put pickle relish on your hot dogs before, but this takes that idea to a whole new level. It’s like having a taste of summer in each bite. These are what summer is all about: grilling outside and fresh ingredients.

Pickle Hot Dogs

Fresh. Crunchy. Delicious.

I topped some of these hot dogs with yellow mustard, but honestly, they’re great without it. You really don’t need to add any condiments beyond the dill pickle relish that’s already there.

I like to keep the cucumber and pickle pieces large. I don’t want to turn them into relish or even salsa. For me, I’m looking for nice big chunks that I can bite into and really get the flavor from. And I prefer them to be a little cold, too. So I’ll toss them into the fridge for 15 minutes or so just before it’s time to start chopping them.

Slicing your hot dogs before cooking helps ensure that the toppings don’t slide off. And that’s a good thing!

Southern-Style Picnic Hot Dogs

Sure, these southern-style picnic hot dogs are easy to make. And they’re good! Nothing beats the crunchy coolness of a good slaw with the heat of a nice hot chili sauce! Yum! Nothing fancy, just great! Great for a big cookout or picnic, it doesn’t get any easier. Sure, I’ve had chili dogs before. And I’ve put slaw on my dogs before. But never had I combined the two on one hot dog! Oh my goodness! What I’ve been missing all these years!

Southern-Style Picnic Hot Dogs

Great For Lunch Or Dinner Too.

These southern-style picnic hot dogs made for a quick dinner the other night. I used packaged slaw mix with Marzetti light slaw mix. While the dogs were grilling I warmed the chili.

Make sure you grab plenty of napkins when you bite into these dogs. You’re going to need them!

Hot Dogs with Avocado

These hot dogs with avocado were sooooo good. They disappeared in minutes, despite being so heavy you’ll want to grunt when you pick them up to take a bite. They’re just that good. The crispness of the onion is offset by the smooth sour cream and avocado, the citrus kick of fresh lime, and just a slight hint of heat.

Hot Dogs with Avocado

Loaded. And Then Some.

These hot dogs with avocado are much, much more than the name implies. They’re loaded. They’re heavy. There’s all sorts of flavors going on. Heat. Creamy. Crunchy. Smooth. Pick an adjective and it’s got it. I love them. This recipe takes a plain old hot dog (or smoked sausage) and really, really up’s the game.

These hot dogs with avocado were sooooo good it really didn’t matter that I almost burned a bun. Heck, I could have charred the bun to total blackness and these still would’ve disappeared in minutes. They’re just that good.

Ingredients

For the salsa

  • 2 medium tomatoes seeded, diced
  • 1 avocado diced
  • 1 jalapeño pepper seeded, minced
  • 1 tablespoon fresh cilantro minced
  • 1 tablespoon hot sauce
  • 2 teaspoons fresh lime juice
  • kosher salt

For the hot dogs

  • 4 hot dogs spiral cut (read how to do it)
  • 4 hot dog buns
  • ¾ cup Monterey Jack cheese grated
  • 2 tablespoons sour cream
  • Red onion diced

Instructions

  • Gently combine all of the salsa ingredients.
  • Add salt to taste.
  • Grill the hot dogs and lightly toast the buns.
  • Top each bun with a hot dog, some of the salsa, a dollop of sour cream, and sprinkle with a little red onion.

Notes

I like to make a shallow cut lengthwise down the dogs before cooking. This will allow them to open up a bit during cooking, giving the toppings a place to go.

Marinated Hot Dogs

Well, who would’ve thought about marinating hot dogs? Sure, I marinate pork, chicken and beef all of the time. But it never occurred to me to make marinated hot dogs. Well, trust me, these hot dogs are delicious! They’re packed with flavor, and super moist! Just like with marinating anything else, you’ll get a much better end result. These are surprisingly good. They’re a great thing to serve at a cookout because they will be the center of every discussion. So make a big batch today!

Marinated Hot Dogs

No Boring Dogs. Ever.

This simple idea for hot dogs really spices up plain old beef hot dogs. There’s no reason to make boring dogs when you just have to ‘soak’ them for an hour in Worcestershire sauce to end up with something so much better.

Spiral and smoke your hot dogs for even more great flavor and that big time ‘wow’!

Oven-Baked Hot Dogs

Who would’ve thought… who would’ve known…. that oven-baked hot dogs could be soooo good? Maybe it was because I was just jonesin’ for a hot dog, but a glance outside made me realize that a grilled dog just wasn’t in my future. These baked ones came out just great! No need to fire up the grill, these dogs satisfied my cravings and then some!

Oven-Baked Hot Dogs

They’re Supposed To Be Messy

Here are they are just before getting cheesed and baked. No point in being shy with the toppings. These are meant to be messy dogs so go all out. And… the money shot! I think these oven-baked hot dogs would be great for a party, kids or not!

Franks and Beans

Franks and beans were one of my favorites as a kid, though I called them hot dogs and not franks. I guess you could serve these as a side dish…. but, I wouldn’t. And some people call them beans and franks, but I think the hot dogs should get top billing!

Franks and Beans

Save The Hot Dogs!

I have two rules about this dish: first, you can’t have too many hot dogs, and second, save eating most of the hot dogs for last. Sad is the day when you get to the bottom of the bowl and all you have left are beans! I’ve been eating my franks and beans this way since I was a little kid. No way would I eat the hot dogs first.

Also make up a batch of my fire-eater campfire beans!

Hot Dogs with Onion, Chili, and Slaw

I was drooling over Chris’ Tennessee Smoky Hot Dogs post over on Nibble Me This, and thinking… boy, that sure sounds and looks great. But, I was in a bit of a hurry, so I changed it up to be a bit easier. These hot dogs with onion, chili, and slaw hit the spot. Just like slaw on pulled pork sandwiches, I love slaw on a hot dog. Add in some hot chili and crunchy onions and I’m in hot dog heaven.

Hot Dogs with Onion, Chili, and Slaw

Not Fancy. Just Good.

My hot dogs with onion, chili and slaw are not quite the same as Chris’, but the inspiration is there and so is the great flavor! Cool slaw really makes the show here. That creamy crunchiness contrasts the grilled dogs and chili perfectly.

Also give my hot dogs with spicy sauce and grilled onions a try!

I also like making these hot dogs with my homemade chili dog sauce.
