Chili Dog Sauce

This is my go-to hot dog chili dog sauce. I let it slow cook for a while to get good and tender. And I also make a huge batch and freeze some for later. I have to have sauce on my dogs.

This chili dog sauce is also outstanding over burgers, topped with cheese and chopped onion.

Chili Dog Sauce

I found this in The Real Chili Cookbook: America’s 100 All-Time Favorite Recipes. I found a copy at the Exit 76 Antique Mall for $3.50. Besides this recipe, I’ve made 5 or 6 of the chili recipes from the book and all have been fantastic. It’s one of the best finds I’ve made!

Instructions

  • Brown the ground beef and drain.
  • Add onion and garlic and cook another 5 minutes.
  • Add remaining ingredients and stir.
  • Simmer until thickened, about 20 minutes. If the sauce gets too thin add a bit of water.
  • Note: You can also cover and slow-cook this sauce for a few hours if you wish. It comes out nice and tender. Cook it less for a chili sauce with a little more bite from the beef.
  • Update: I made this great sauce again over the weekend. Our grocery store was out of premium enchilada sauce, so I used a “lesser” brand. I ended up adding a good amount of hot chile powder to the mix, but it still came out fantastic.

Marinated Hot Dogs

Well, who would’ve thought about marinating hot dogs? Sure, I marinate pork and beef all of the time. But it never occurred to me to make marinated hot dogs. Well, trust me, these hot dogs are delicious! They’re packed with flavor, and super moist!

Marinated Hot Dogs

This simple idea for hot dogs really spices up plain old beef hot dogs. There’s no reason to make boring dogs when you just have to ‘soak’ them for an hour in Worcestershire sauce to end up with something so much better.

Spiral and smoke your hot dogs for even more great flavor and that big time ‘wow’!

Oven-Baked Hot Dogs

Who would’ve thought… who would’ve known…. that oven-baked hot dogs could be soooo good? Maybe it was because I was just jonesin’ for a hot dog, but a glance outside made me realize that a grilled dog just wasn’t in my future. These baked ones came out just great!

Oven-Baked Hot Dogs

Here are they are just before getting cheesed and baked. No point in being shy with the toppings. These are meant to be messy dogs so go all out. And… the money shot! I think these oven-baked hot dogs would be great for a party, kids or not!

Also try my awesome pickle hot dogs. For another great oven-baked favorite, cook up a few racks of oven-baked ribs.

Hot Dogs with Onion, Chili, and Slaw

I was drooling over Chris’ Tennessee Smoky Hot Dogs posting over on Nibble Me This, and thinking… boy, that sure sounds and looks great. But, I was in a bit of a hurry, so I changed it up to be a bit easier. These hot dogs with onion, chili, and slaw hit the spot. Just like slaw on pulled pork sandwiches, I love slaw on a hot dog. And in some hot chili and crunchy onions and I’m in hot dog heaven.

Hot Dogs with Onion, Chili, and Slaw

It’s not the same as Chris’, but the inspiration is there and so is the great flavor! Also give my hot dogs with spicy sauce and grilled onions a try!

I also like making these hot dogs with my homemade chili dog sauce.

Grilled Chicago Hot Dog

This is my take on a grilled Chicago hot dog. Now, don’t email me telling me I’ve broken some cardinal rule by grilling these (on my Weber grill!). I’ve had “real” Chicago dogs and love them, but if it’s not -45 F outside, I’m going to fire up a grill when I make hot dogs.

Grilled Chicago Hot Dog

These hot dogs really came out great. I love the fresh veggies on them. That cold crunch really adds a lot to the taste.

Memphis-Style BBQ Hot Dogs

Nothing beats a good ole hot dog off the grill. And there’s no need to just heap on the mustard or relish and call it done. You can throw just about anything that’s in your fridge on a dog (including mayo!). These Memphis-Style BBQ hot dogs have that great down-south flavor from smoky bacon and barbecue sauce, topped with gooey cheese, and kicked up with green onions and jalapeno slices.

Memphis-Style BBQ Hot Dogs

I used a spicy BBQ sauce on these Memphis-style BBQ hot dogs. You can go with sweet or smoky, or whatever suits your fancy.

Muffuletta Hot Dog

This is my take on a great recipe posted by Jessica at Cajunlicious, one of my most favorite blogs to follow. Sadly, Cajunlicious is no more. Happily, I snagged the recipe for a muffuletta hot dog before it disappeared. And speaking of disappearing, that’s what happened to this scrumptious dish. I love muffuletta sandwiches. I love hot dogs. Now I can have both in one bite!

Muffuletta Hot Dog

I often make my own olive salad, but I had a bit of Boscoli’s left over from making a muffuletta pasta salad so I used that instead for this muffuletta hot dog. The end result was fantastic!

Southwestern Hot Dog

Mayonnaise on a hot dog can be a beautiful thing. Though, I can honestly say that it’s not anything I had growing up. I was a ketchup-on-a-hot-dog kid. I didn’t like the tang of mustard. This southwestern hot dog is one of the hot dogs that keeps me believing in keeping an open mind when it comes to topping dogs. Or anything else for that matter.

Southwestern Hot Dog

Times have changed, and I’ll put just about anything on a hot dog. Including mayonnaise. These southwestern hot dogs are awesome. If you don’t have (or want to make) fresh pico de gallo, use jarred or substitute salsa instead.

Also try my simple but great spiraled hot dogs.

Spiraled Hot Dogs

Just tossing a few dogs on the grill is a quick way to get dinner done. But those plain-old looking dogs can get mighty boring after a while. Of course you can put all sorts of fancy toppings on them (my favorite is the Chicago dog or just chili, onions and cheese). Another simple way to visually jazz them up is to score them in a spiral pattern, making spiraled hot dogs. This not only looks cool, it also gives your condiments a way to hold on to the dog.

Spiraled Hot Dogs

To make the spiral, just start on one end with a sharp knife held at a 30-to-45 degree angle (the sharper the angle, the less spirals you’ll get) and start to rotate the dog. I find it’s easier to do with the dog standing up on one end. Start at the top with the knife, rotating the dog until the knife gets to the bottom.

For an extra flash, score the ends with a ‘+’ sign, 1/4″-1/2″ deep.

Grill the dogs until they puff up pretty and golden brown!
