Wiz Hot Dogs

I have a habit of copying recipes from restaurants or food trucks I hear about or see on TV. Here lately I’ve been on a major campaign to copy some of the crazy great dogs from Duke’s Gourmet Dogs in Minster, Ohio, which closed recently. Sadly. Warm chili. Crunchy potato straws (an ingredient I haven’t had in years). And my favorite, ooey gooey cheese sauce. Lots and lots of cheese sauce. Wiz hot dogs are crazy good.

Like I’ve said before, if it’s going to be messy to eat, it’s going to taste great and Wiz dogs are definitely messy and therefore, great to eat!

Wiz Hot Dogs

Crazy Good. And Kinda Fun.

I was tempted to add a few chopped jalapenos to these Wiz hot dogs. I like some kick to my dogs but I went another route and used spicy cheese sauce instead. Nothing beats cheese on a hot dog. Except for maybe macaroni-and-cheese. Yes, on a hot dog.

Try my Charlie Mac dog too.

Wisconsin Badger Cheesy Hot Dog

A few years ago the Big 10 basketball tournament was held here in Indianapolis. As part of the event, the Levy restaurant group in Chicago produced unique hot dogs that highlight each of the Big 10 teams. I came across a copy of the list of the dogs recently, and just had to make each of them. The Wisconsin Badger cheesy hot dog packs on the cheese and… Cheetos on a hot dog?! Brilliant! All topped with delicious pepper relish. Crunchy yumminess!

You have to cut me some slack about not knowing all of the Big 10 team names and colors! I went to an SEC school!

Wisconsin Badger Cheesy Hot Dog

Cheetos For The Win

Putting Cheetos on a hot dog not only makes them even more yummy it makes them even more fun to eat. You can’t go wrong with this Wisconsin Badger cheesy hot dog. All the tastiest things in one bite! For a twist, top these dogs with my caramel crunchy Cheetos! But then I guess it won’t be a Badger dog! Oops!

The Chicago Dog

Whenever I go out for a gourmet dog at DJ’s Hot Dog Company (sadly now closed), I always grab the Chicago Dog. I love the crunchy vegetables, celery salt, and of course, the neon pickle relish. Now, thanks to Russell van Kraayenburg’s new book, Haute Dogs, I am able to make an equally fantastic version of this classic hot dog (and many others) at home. If you’re into hot dogs like I am, you’ll enjoy the many recipes in the book.

The Chicago Dog

It’s Like Having A Tasty Dog Salad

Make sure you make more than one of these Chicago dogs because you can’t just eat one. I always think ‘fresh’ when I have one of these dogs. There’s lots going on in every bite. Fresh things. I feel good about eating a hot dog. Kinda odd, but that’s how it is. They just make me happy!

Also try my trailer park dog.

The Capone Hot Dog

I was enjoying another great episode (I think it was a re-run, but it doesn’t matter because I can watch the show all day) of Eat Street on the Cooking Channel when they came across The Dogfather food truck in Worcester, Massachusetts. The Dogfather has a seriously great menu full of hot dog variations. I mean everything you can imagine and a lot of things you didn’t. Like this Capone hot dog.

The Capone Hot Dog

Greatness In A Hot Dog

So I took a gander at their full truck menu and saw this awesome hotdog. The Capone Hot Dog is seriously easy it make, but it’s also seriously tasty to boot. Grilled pepper crunch and smoky bacon, topped with melted yummy cheese. It’s a wonderful combination of flavors and textures in every single bite. For something different, something that will wow your guests, make this at your next cookout!

I made the dogs on my little ole Weber Q 1200, my favorite portable grill. It’s perfect for the two of us, and with the griddle insert, perfect for sautéing things like bell peppers for these tasty dogs.

Also try the Chicago dog.

Stroganoff Hot Dogs

Hot dogs should never get boring. I make them often, specially during the nicer weather months of the year. Fortunately, it takes very little effort to transform a normal dog into something fantastic. These Stroganoff hot dogs combine grilled onions and mushrooms with a creamy sauce and fresh toppings. For easy outdoor cooking, cook the onions and mushrooms on the same grill you cook the dogs on, using a vegetable basket or griddle.

Stroganoff Hot Dogs

No Boring Hot Dogs Here

A nice Italian sausage or bratwurst can be substituted for hot dogs for an even more amazing dish. But using a regular, good ole dog will still make for an outstanding Stroganoff hot dog!

If you prefer to make your dogs in the air fryer, go for it! No matter how you cook them, try my little ‘trick’ for hot dog greatness. Cut a shallow slit down one edge of the dog before cooking. As it cooks, the dog will open up slightly. When you put it on the bun, but it in cut-side up. That’ll give the toppings a place to settle into instead of sliding off!

Also try the Capone hot dog.

Southwestern Hot Dog

Mayonnaise on a hot dog can be a beautiful thing. Though, I can honestly say that it’s not anything I had growing up. I was a ketchup-on-a-hot-dog kid. I didn’t like the tang of mustard. This southwestern hot dog is one of the hot dogs that keeps me believing in keeping an open mind when it comes to topping dogs. Or anything else for that matter.

Southwestern Hot Dog

Mayo On A Hot Dog? What?

Times have changed, and I’ll put just about anything on a hot dog. Including mayonnaise. These southwestern hot dogs are awesome. The ingredients list looks pretty normal. Don’t let the mayo throw you. You gotta go for it. Give it a try. You’ll like it.

If you don’t have (or want to make) fresh pico de gallo, use jarred or substitute salsa instead.

Also try my simple but great spiraled hot dogs.

Salsa Hot Dogs

Mmmmm. Boy oh boy. Salsa hot dogs. Mighty darned tasty. Like a hand-held serving of nachos. As spicy as you want it to be depending on the salsa you use. Of course, like nachos, you can add anything else you want. Like pickled jalapeno slices. Or shredded cheese. No matter what you do, these are great. I love the cool sour cream and tomatoes with the hot beef dogs and the spicy salsa, along with the crunch of the lettuce.

Salsa Hot Dogs

A Delightfully Different Dog

These salsa hot dogs were the perfect dogs to enjoy outside on the deck on a beautiful spring day. I couldn’t get over how much they were like eating nachos. But they were fun. There’s a lot of flavor in each and every bite. They’re different and delicious. I’d make these again and again.

Also try my sandwich roll hot dogs. They’re different.

Seattle-Style Hot Dogs

Mmmmmm. Oh my goodness. Where have I been that I didn’t know that slathering cream cheese on a hot dog is just about the best thing ever? This simple approach to Seattle-style hot dogs is a fantastic way to jazz up your ‘usual’ hot dog.

Seattle-Style Hot Dogs

Fancy. And Good.

I used pickled pepper rings, but you can substitute jalapenos instead for a little kick. To make your Seattle-style hot dogs look a bit out-of-the-ordinary, cut a ‘+’ pattern in the ends before tossing them onto the grill. The ends will separate and give the dogs a different look. You can also cut them into spirals and amaze everyone (plus they hold ingredients better!).

These are delicious hot dogs with a great twist that everyone will enjoy.

Sandwich Roll Hot Dogs

I recently received a copy of Haute Dogs. It is chock full of hot dog ideas, along with other great recipes for things like fantastic relishes and yummy sauces. When I ran across this simple approach for sandwich roll hot dogs I just had to make them. Sure, they’re nothing fancy, but they look great!

Sandwich Roll Hot Dogs

They’re Fun To Make. And Eat.

If you can find foot-long hot dogs then you just need one dog per sandwich roll hot dog. Otherwise, just use two hot dogs for each roll. And don’t be shy when squirting the mustard and ketchup inside the rolls. No one will be expecting it.

I know it looks like a kinda crazy idea. But they are different and kinda cool, too. Everyone will be talking about them, that’s for sure!
