Alpine Hot Dogs

I love mushrooms on a burger, so why not load up a hot dog with tons and tons of sauteed mushrooms and a good helping of Swiss cheese? These Alpine hot dogs combine great mushroom flavor with yummy all-beef hot dogs and great creamy nutty Swiss cheese. Every bite is delicious. These hot dogs are different and that makes them extra special. As much as I love traditional hot dogs, with just mustard, sometimes I want something that’ll really wow me instead! Well, here I am… wowed!

Alpine Hot Dogs

Mushrooms And Hot Dogs Are Meant For Each Other

Beefy dogs and beefy mushrooms go together perfectly. I would definitely recommend bigger, juicier, fatter dogs. You could even go with a smoked sausage or Polish sausage. Just don’t use a dog with ‘weird’ extra flavors (like say, jalapeno) that might fight the toppings!

And don’t be tempted to add mustard to these Alpine hot dogs. They stand on their own. No condiments needed. Nothing. Resist the temptation! Trust me, you don’t need them. They’ll hide the wonderful combination of flavors.

Also try my bacon-wrapped hot dogs with Fire-Eater sauce. They’re crazy good too!

Pickled Hot Dogs

When I made these pickled hot dogs, a little voice in the back of my head kept asking if I was making Vienna sausages. To which I replied, No. They may sort of look like Vienna sausages (if they came in a Mason jar). But oh my, they are something completely different.

Pickled hot dogs are just delicious. A little spicy (I added habaneros from our garden), a little garlicky, and a great hit of pickling spice and vinegar.

Pickled Hot Dogs

Great Snacks. Grilled Or Not.

It’s quite alright to just eat these yummy dogs right out of the jar. I certainly did. But they are even better grilled. I grilled them just like regular ole dogs, put them on buns, and gobbled them down. You don’t want to add a bunch of toppings, though. You don’t want to bury the great pickled flavor. And while you’re at it, try a quick and easy batch of grilled pickles!

Get a big jug of quality white vinegar, you’re going to want a whole bunch of these hot dogs!

Also try my spicy pickled pineapple.

Stroganoff Hot Dogs

Hot dogs should never get boring. I make them often, especially during the nicer weather months of the year. Fortunately, it takes very little effort to transform a normal dog into something fantastic. These Stroganoff hot dogs combine grilled onions and mushrooms with a creamy sauce and fresh toppings. For easy outdoor cooking, cook the onions and mushrooms on the same grill you cook the dogs on, using a vegetable basket or griddle.

Stroganoff Hot Dogs

No Boring Hot Dogs Here

A nice Italian sausage or bratwurst can be substituted for hot dogs for an even more amazing dish. But using a regular, good ole dog will still make for an outstanding Stroganoff hot dog!

If you prefer to make your dogs in the air fryer, go for it! No matter how you cook them, try my little ‘trick’ for hot dog greatness. Cut a shallow slit down one edge of the dog before cooking. As it cooks, the dog will open up slightly. When you put it on the bun, put it in cut-side up. That’ll give the toppings a place to settle into instead of sliding off!

Also try the Capone hot dog.

The Capone Hot Dog

I was enjoying another great episode (I think it was a re-run, but it doesn’t matter because I can watch the show all day) of Eat Street on the Cooking Channel when they came across The Dogfather food truck in Worcester, Massachusetts. The Dogfather has a seriously great menu full of hot dog variations. I mean everything you can imagine and a lot of things you didn’t. Like this Capone hot dog.

The Capone Hot Dog

Greatness In A Hot Dog

So I took a gander at their full truck menu and saw this awesome hotdog. The Capone Hot Dog is seriously easy to make, but it’s also seriously tasty to boot. Grilled pepper crunch and smoky bacon, topped with melted yummy cheese. It’s a wonderful combination of flavors and textures in every single bite. For something different, something that will wow your guests, make this at your next cookout!

I made the dogs on my little ole Weber Q 1200, my favorite portable grill. It’s perfect for the two of us, and with the griddle insert, perfect for sautéing things like bell peppers for these tasty dogs.

Also try the Chicago dog.

Islander Hot Dogs

These Islander hot dogs are another example of a great dog that doesn’t take a lot of work to put together. Think hot dog. Think salad. Put them together. That’s it! My wife proclaimed these to be one of the best dogs I’ve ever made, even though they are definitely one of the easiest. There’s a great contrast between the grilled beefy dogs, crispy cold lettuce, tomato, and pickle, and tartness from the salad dressing.

Islander Hot Dogs

Salad… On A Hot Dog?

You could add more of your favorite salad toppings to your Islander hot dogs. Like crumbled cooked bacon. Or chopped onions. Or even croutons! But I have to say that the Thousand Island salad dressing is what really makes these hot dogs different. And special. I really liked the flavor of the dressing on them. It’s something I’ll add more often that’s for sure.

Also give my Jersey City dogs a try.

Charlie Mac Hot Dog

This is another (fantastic) copycat of a hot dog that you can grab from the Dougie Dog food truck in Vancouver, Canada. Nope, I’ve never been there. But, I saw the Dougie Dog truck on a recent episode of Eat Street on the Cooking Channel and fell in love with their menu. They have some crazy great dogs. Like this Charlie Mac hot dog. This is one creative delicious idea for a hot dog.

Charlie Mac Dog

My Goodness This Is One Great Dog

Everything about this Charlie Mac hot dog screams yummy. And I didn’t skimp on the buns, either. I picked up some fresh-baked hot dog buns from my local bakery, Taylor’s Bakery. All I have to do is call the day ahead and place my order. The next morning I’m picking up the most soft and fantastic smelling buns ever.

Ooey gooey cheese belongs on a hot dog. Also give my Wiz dog a try. It’s loaded with cheese.

Pizza Hot Dogs

Yes! Give me some pizza hot dogs any day and I’m a happy guy! Great sauce and ooey-gooey cheese with a little basil. What is there not to like? I approach these dogs exactly like I would a pizza crust. I can put the same toppings on my hot dog as I can put on my pizza. Onions, mushrooms, pepperoncinis, it doesn’t matter what!

Pizza Hot Dogs

Add Greatness

I make a big batch of marinara sauce in our slow cooker and keep some on hand in the freezer for easy meals like these pizza hot dogs. Just warm the sauce a bit and spoon it over a cooked dog. Then add all of those great toppings.

This is also a great way to use up those last few tablespoons of jarred pizza sauce that we always end up with.

Also try my salsa dogs.

Mushroom Swiss Melt Hot Dog

A different day, a different dog! This is another great idea from Dougie Dog from Vancouver, Canada. I’ve never been there, but I caught the truck on an episode of Eat Street and instantly knew that I was going to have to make my take on some of their dogs, like this mushroom Swiss melt hot dog.

Mushroom Swiss Melt Hot Dog

You can’t go wrong with the combination of grilled, woodsy mushrooms, smoky bacon, Swiss and the kick of Dijon mustard. This mushroom Swiss melt hot dog is a mighty fine dog, easy to make, and definitely different.

I get my hot dog buns from our local bakery, Taylor’s. Their buns blow the store-bought ones away by a country mile. Why make a fru-fru dog and put it on a poo-poo bun? Oh, I might have to trademark that saying…

Derby Hot Dog

I’m borderline addicted to food trucks. Which also means I love watching Eat Street, the show about food trucks that airs on the Cooking Channel. Host James Cunningham travels around North America visiting all of the great trucks. What a dream job that would be. An episode aired the other day on Dougie Doug, a truck in Vancouver. Every hot dog on the menu looked absolutely scrumptious, so I decided to make a few of them here at home. I started with the delicious Derby hot dog. Topped with Swiss, grilled mushrooms, onion, jalapeno and BBQ sauce, this is one mighty fine dog.

Derby Hot Dog

Go To A Bakery For The Best Buns

A great Derby hot dog needs a great bun, so I’ve ditched the grocery store offerings and have been ordering fresh buns from our local bakery, Taylor’s Bakery. The buns are so fantastic. Soft, tasty, with a wonderful bread aroma. They barely cost more than the ones in the store that just can’t even compare at all in quality or flavor.

Nacho Hot Dogs

My addiction to hot dogs is not a secret. I’ve made them hundreds (it seems) of different ways, from traditional to definitely-not-traditional. A dog and a bun make a great canvas for flavors (I bet no one has ever said that before). Like these nacho hot dogs. They’re really great. I really like the contrast between the beefy dog flavor and the coolness of the guacamole and sour cream, along with the crunchiness of the chips.

These hot dogs have some of my favorite toppings on them (you can add whatever, of course).

Nacho Hot Dogs

Embellish As You Like

I recommend making a thin slice down the dogs before cooking them. Not all the way through, but about 1/4″. The slice will open up as the dogs cook. This gives the toppings a place to go. That way they don’t just roll off the dogs!

I could see adding refried beans. Or black olives. Jalapenos. Chopped tomatoes. Green chiles. You name it. Also try my other variation on nacho hot dogs. Same concept, different toppings.
