German Cowboy Hot Dog

Bourbon baked beans, kraut and spicy mustard on a dog? Insanely good! Bourbon baked beans take your standard great dog and make it just fantastic. A little sweetness, then the crunch of the kraut, and the spicy kick from the mustard. Everything great in every bite. I could’ve eaten more of these German Cowboys hot dogs than I’ll ever admit online. Or admit even in person for that matter!

German Cowboy Hot Dog

No More Boring Hot Dogs

The German Cowboy hot dog is another great menu item I ran across from Duke’s Gourmet Hot Dogs. They have the most fantastic hot dog menu I’ve ever come across. Every single one makes you drool!

I’ve really enjoyed making hot dogs that don’t remind me of the pretty plain ones I remember as a kid. I mean, those weren’t bad. But they weren’t amazing. These are.

Try my American cowboy dogs too. Giddy up!

  • Toast buns.
  • Add dogs to buns.
  • Top with the warmed beans and kraut.
  • Add mustard and devour.

Notes

I liked to cut a shallow slit down the tops of my dogs before cooking. That way, they open up just slightly while cooking, making a wonderful little ‘trough’ for the toppings.

I came across a copy of the list of the dogs recently, and just had to make each of them. The Indiana Hoosier hot dog was one of our favorites of all the dogs.

We were both pleasantly surprised at how well slaw and relish go together. And the crunchy fried onions sealed the deal. These are fantastic dogs, ones we’ll make again and again.

Red Pepper Relish Is A Game Changer

I haven’t had much red pepper relish in my life. Well, ok, I probably never had it. I think it’s fantastic stuff. It’ll become a staple around here for hot dogs like this Indiana Hoosier hot dog and our wraps.

Iowa Hawkeye Hot Dog

The Big 10 basketball tournament was here in Indianapolis a few years ago. As part of the event, the Levy restaurant group in Chicago produced unique hot dogs. Each highlights each of the Big 10 teams. I came across a copy of the list of the dogs recently, and just had to make each of them, like the Iowa Hawkeye hot dog. Topped with corn salsa, kicked-up pepperjack cheese, and tortilla strips, it’s one heck of a hot dog! I couldn’t find corn salsa with enough corn in it so I roasted an ear of corn on the grill while I was cooking the hot dogs. I cut off the kernels and added them to the salsa. Perfect!

Salsa Wakes Up Hot Dogs

I love salsa on a hot dog and not just on a Iowa Hawkeye hot dog. It’s like adding grownup ketchup, but no one will judge you. The pop of the corn kernels in the salsa is a really nice unexpected texture. So are the crunchy tortilla strips.

I came across a copy of the list of the dogs recently, and just had to make each of them. Smoky black bean salsa, melted cheddar, and mustard top the Purdue Boilermaker hot dog. The mustard and salsa were great. So was the salsa.

Purdue Boilermaker Hot Dog

This Is A Great Hot Dog

The Purdue Boilermaker hot dog was a big hit. And very easy to make. A real crowd-pleaser! Sure, everyone kind of expects mustard on a hot dog. Demands it, even. But black bean salsa? Yeah, that’s different!

Illinois Fighting Illini Cheddar Hot Dog

Indianapolis recently hosted the Big 10 basketball tournament. As part of the event the Levy restaurant group in Chicago produced a line of unique hot dogs. Each dog highlighted each of the teams in the tournament. I recently came across a copy of the list of the hot dogs, and I just had to make each and every one of them. Topped with tons of tasty yumminess the Illinois Fighting Illini cheddar hot dog is a dog to remember. Because things like melted cheese, crispy tortilla strips and Dijon mustard are great together and they’re even better on top of a steaming hot hot dog!

Illinois Fighting Illini Cheddar Hot Dog

One Unique Hot Dog!

Easy to make and great tasting, the Illinois Fighting Illini cheddar hot dog is a winner! I wouldn’t be shy with any of the toppings. There’s really no such thing as having too much of any of them. Yeah, things might fall off when you pick them up. That’s part of the fun of eating them!

Michigan State Spicy Spartan Hot Dog

A few years ago the Big 10 basketball tournament was held here in Indianapolis. As part of the event, the Levy restaurant group in Chicago produced unique hot dogs that highlight each of the Big 10 teams. I came across a copy of the list of the dogs recently, and just had to make each of them. These Michigan State spicy Spartan hot dogs are definitely spicy, but in a really good way. Jalapeno relish has a kick, but it’s not overwhelming at all. And since we’re doing spicy, let’s keep going by adding some spicy pepper jack cheese and spicy mustard. It’s a good heat for sure and one that will wake you up! These are not boring dogs!

Michigan State Spicy Spartan Hot Dog

No Boring Hot Dogs Here!

Although jalapeno relish looks a lot like pickled jalapenos, it’s actually a bit sweet so the heat is not that hot. Oh it’s there, don’t get me wrong.  It’s great stuff that is also fantastic on burgers and wraps. And it’s outstanding on a Michigan State Spicy Spartan hot dog.

Penn State Roaring Lion Hot Dog

A few years ago the Big 10 basketball tournament was held here in Indianapolis. As part of the event, the Levy restaurant group in Chicago produced unique hot dogs that highlight each of the Big 10 teams. I came across a copy of the list of the dogs recently, and just had to make each of them. The Penn State Roaring Lion hot dog is one fantastic dog. It has sauerkraut, which is pretty much a requirement on a hot dog in my book. And spicy mustard, another good thing. Then there’s jalapeno relish because well, more kick is more better. Finally, a few crunchy blue tortilla strips thrown in for good measure. If it seems like an usual combination, it’s not. It’s great

Jalapeno Relish Tops Dogs Right

Jalapeno relish is a great thing that I only recently discovered. Though it might look a bit like pickled jalapenos, it’s actually not that particularly spicy and it has a sweet side to it too. It’s the perfect topping for this Penn State Roaring Lion hot dog.
