Wisconsin Badger Cheesy Hot Dog

A few years ago the Big 10 basketball tournament was held here in Indianapolis. As part of the event, the Levy restaurant group in Chicago produced unique hot dogs that highlight each of the Big 10 teams. I came across a copy of the list of the dogs recently, and just had to make each of them. The Wisconsin Badger cheesy hot dog packs on the cheese and… Cheetos on a hot dog?! Brilliant! All topped with delicious pepper relish. Crunchy yumminess!

You have to cut me some slack about not knowing all of the Big 10 team names and colors! I went to an SEC school!

For a twist, top these dogs with my caramel crunchy Cheetos! But then I guess it won’t be a Badger dog! Oops!

The marmalade will become a staple in our house, but not just on Northwestern Wildcat hot dogs. I’m sure it’ll be amazing on pork burgers too! This is one fantastic hot dog. Take the time to make the delicious purple onion marmalade and you’ll be rewarded. Big time.

Ohio State Buckeyes Hot Dog

Pepper Relish For The Win

Pepper relish is a wonderous thing that I’ve started using more and more. It’s got a bit of a kick to it, but it’s also nice and sweet. It’s not only great on Ohio State Buckeyes hot dogs but also on sandwiches and wraps.

Nebraska Cornhusker Hot Dog

Indianapolis recently hosted the Big 10 basketball tournament. As part of the event, the Levy restaurant group in Chicago produced unique hot dogs that highlighted each of the Big 10 teams. I came across a copy of the list of the dogs recently, and just had to make each of them. Corn flavor is packed into every bite of the Nebraska Cornhusker hot dog. Thanks to a corn salsa and of course, corny Frito chips. And don’t forget the smooth Provolone cheese.

Nebraska Cornhusker Hot Dog

Keep It Corny!

I couldn’t find (or make) tomato corn relish, so I substituted corn salsa. A little different than relish, of course, but this Nebraska Cornhusker hot dog was still outstanding. Salsa on hot dogs is a great thing, like adding amped-up ketchup.

Brutus Hot Dogs

A hot dog doesn’t have to be complicated to be great. I came across the idea for these Brutus hot dogs while looking at the menu for Duke’s Gourmet Dogs which was (now closed) located in Minster, Ohio. These little yummies pack sweet relish, spicy jalapenos, crunchy onions and good ole ketchup and mustard into every bite.

Brutus Hot Dogs

I Didn’t Know That I Like Sweet Relish

Oddly, neither my wife or I like sweet relish, but it really, really works on these Brutus hot dogs. The sweetness gets offset by the heat of the jalapenos and the bite of onions. These are actually very, very yummy and really, can you get any easier?

Also try my Cajun hot dogs. Crazy good, crazy easy!

Wiz Hot Dogs

I have a habit of copying recipes from restaurants or food trucks I hear about or see on TV. Here lately I’ve been on a major campaign to copy some of the crazy great dogs from Duke’s Gourmet Dogs in Minster, Ohio, which closed recently. Sadly. Warm chili. Crunchy potato straws (an ingredient I haven’t had in years). And my favorite, ooey gooey cheese sauce. Lots and lots of cheese sauce. Wiz hot dogs are crazy good.

Like I’ve said before, if it’s going to be messy to eat, it’s going to taste great and Wiz dogs are definitely messy and therefore, great to eat!

Wiz Hot Dogs

Crazy Good. And Kinda Fun.

I was tempted to add a few chopped jalapenos to these Wiz hot dogs. I like some kick to my dogs but I went another route and used spicy cheese sauce instead. Nothing beats cheese on a hot dog. Except for maybe macaroni-and-cheese. Yes, on a hot dog.

Try my Charlie Mac dog too.

Mexican Charred Corn Hot Dog

Wow, I just had no idea how much we would both love this Mexican charred corn hot dog. It has such a wonderful combination of tastes, from the bite of the onion, to that great sweetness you get from roasted corn, fantastic citrus lime mayonnaise, all served over a grilled all-beef hot dog. Topped with crumbled Cotija cheese! These dogs were an absolute treat!

Mexican Charred Corn Hot Dog

Different. And Delicious.

Mexican charred corn hot dogs are light and refreshing, the perfect dogs for a sunny day. If fresh corn-on-the-cob is no longer available in your area, you can use canned or frozen corn kernels. Drain them first and pat dry so that they roast well. Pour the kernels out onto a baking sheet and place under the broiler just long enough for them to start to char. It won’t take long, so don’t walk away and ignore them. Give them a stir or two as they roast to make sure they are charred evenly.

I almost always use Blue Plate mayonnaise in the dishes I make. I think it is the best around. If you can’t find it locally you can pick it up online for a fair price.

You’ll want to also try my loaded Mexican hot dogs.

Steakhouse Hot Dogs

I’ve put onions on a hot dog before, sure. And I’ve even put steak sauce on a hot dog before. Why did it never occur to me until now to add tomatoes? Well, by golly, as simple as they are, these steakhouse hot dogs are downright delicious! Perfect for a picnic or family get-together. Not boring. Different. And really good. That great all-beef dog taste with steak sauce is awesome as is, but add the crunch of some onions and the cool tomato slices, and you’ve got a darned good dog. Grab two, and some chips.

Steakhouse Hot Dogs

Easy. But Oh So Good.

It’s possible that I might have slipped a few drops of hot sauce into the steak sauce before pouring it over my steakhouse hot dogs. All I’m saying is that it’s possible. Use your own discretion on that one.

Also try my Stroganoff hot dogs. A little different, but very good.

Loaded Mexican Hot Dogs

Yes, under all those toppings lies a big ole grilled all-beef dog. My loaded Mexican hot dogs are not for the faint of heart. You pick it up and you don’t set it down until it’s all gone. Every bite is crazy good. Tons of cheese. Fresh avocado. Crunchy red onion, Briny black olives. Sharp green onions. And a great twist: grilled lime squeezed on top for a fresh citrus hit. We loved these dogs.

Loaded Mexican Hot Dogs

Loaded Is An Understatement

I served these loaded Mexican hot dogs with a side of some just-as-crazy-good bean dip and some warmed tortilla chips. It was the perfect dinner basket!
